Tomato Bele Bath by Hema Subramanian is a flavorful Karnataka-style rice made with tomatoes, dal, and aromatic spices. A perfect one-pot meal for lunch or dinner.
Ingredients
1/2cup rice
1/2cup toor dal
5cups water
salt (as needed)
1tbsp oil
1tbsp ghee
1tsp chana dal
1tsp urad dal
cashew nuts (few)
1tsp mustard seeds
1tsp cumin seeds
1/4tsp hing / asafoetida
ginger (finely chopped)
2green chilli (finely chopped)
1/2cup shallots (chopped)
curry leaves (few)
6 tomato (chopped)
1/2tsp turmeric powder
2tsp chilli powder
2tsp coriander powder
1tsp salt
2cups water
coriander (chopped)
ghee (as needed)
Instructions
Prep Work

Wash rice and dalWash the rice and toor dal thoroughly until the water runs clear

Soak ingredientsSoak the washed rice and dal in water for some time

Chop vegetablesChop tomatoes, shallots, ginger and green chillies

Prepare corianderChop coriander leaves and keep them ready for garnish
Method

Pressure cook rice and dalTransfer the soaked rice and dal to a pressure cooker with water and salt, then cook for 4 whistles

Mash cooked mixtureOnce the pressure releases, transfer the cooked rice and dal to a bowl

Fry dals and nutsHeat oil and ghee in a kadai and fry chana dal, urad dal and cashews until golden

Prepare temperingAdd mustard seeds, cumin seeds, asafoetida, ginger and green chillies and saute well

Saute shallotsAdd shallots and curry leaves and cook until soft

Cook tomatoesAdd tomatoes, turmeric powder, chilli powder, coriander powder and salt, then mix well

Simmer masalaPour water and cook until the raw smell disappears

Combine rice mixtureGradually add the cooked rice and dal mixture and combine well

Cook on low flameKeep the flame low and allow the bele bath to cook gently

Finish and serveAdd coriander leaves and ghee, mix well and serve hot
